Integrating Microsoft Copilot into Excel

In our Copilot series, we’ve explored its capabilities with various Microsoft apps. In this article, our focus turns to integrating Microsoft Copilot into Excel.

Through a demonstration, I’ll illustrate how Copilot enhances Excel efficiency, automatically handling tasks such as date formatting, pivot table creation, and chart generation.

Prompt Copilot to reformat a date

  1. In your Excel table environment, select Copilot.

Excel

  1. Instruct Copilot: “Format the date as 01/01/2000.”
  2. Outcome: Column C has been reformatted.

Generate a column using a formula

In Excel, Copilot is capable of generating new columns along with formulas. You have the option to review the formula generated by Copilot before inserting it into the new column. Subsequently, a new column containing the formulas will be visible.
  1. Within the prompt box, request Copilot to “Create a ‘commissions’ column by multiplying the total sales by 20.”

Excel

Generate a pivot table

Copilot can generate pivot tables from table data, displaying them in the Copilot chat. You can expand the view by opening a new tab.

  1. Prompt Copilot to generate: ‘Create a pivot table showing services sold, total sales price, and number of units sold.'”

Excel

This pivot table displays all services sold along with the quantity sold for each.
